Ashley Gann Biography

Ashley Gann is an American meteorologist currently serving as the Public Information Officer for Auburn University’s Safety and Security Department, a role she assumed in July 2023. Prior to this, she was the chief meteorologist at CBS 42 in Birmingham, Alabama, a position she held since 2015. She has also served as chief meteorologist for CBS 8 (WAKA) and ABC Montgomery (WNCF) in Montgomery, Alabama.

Gann made history as the first female chief meteorologist in Alabama and remains the only woman to hold that title in Birmingham. Reflecting on her transition to Auburn University, she explained, “I’ll have a very unique opportunity to still use my skill sets, just in a different capacity.” As an Auburn alumna with a degree in aerospace engineering, the move is especially meaningful. While excited about her new role, Gann expressed bittersweet feelings about leaving CBS 42, saying, “I’m just grateful because we chose between two good options.”

A passionate advocate for STEM education, Gann has dedicated much of her career to inspiring young girls to pursue careers in science and technology. She has volunteered with organizations such as Girls INC. of Alabama and Girl Scouts of America, emphasizing the importance of engaging the next generation of scientists. In her new position, Gann plans to continue this work by visiting schools in Lee County to connect with students. “One of my favorite things about being chief meteorologist was being in the community and doing school visits, and I’ll still be able to do that in my new job,” she shared.

Gann is also looking forward to life in Auburn with her family, from tailgating on fall Saturdays to watching her husband, Derek, grow his entrepreneurial ventures in the area. “He left a very successful franchise group to marry me,” she noted, adding, “Going to Auburn is going to be exciting as we watch him take on a new business and grow it.”

Ashley’s passion to pursue the weather started at a young age in Birmingham. She started her first try as a meteorologist in Birmingham at the age of 5 years old. She grew up and spent her entire childhood in Fort Worth, Texas where she experienced harsh weather from hailstone to tornadoes. She is a National Weather Service certified storm spotter and she is also a storm chaser.

Before joining CBS 42, Gann worked as the Chief Meteorologist for Alabama News Network (CBS & ABC affiliates) in Montgomery, Alabama. Besides her being a chief meteorologist she delivered the weather at 11Alive (WXIA) in Atlanta, CBS 8 (WAKA) in Montgomery, and WTOK in Meridian, Mississippi. She also practiced her forecasting skills at KLKN Lincoln, Nebraska, and WSAV out of Savannah, GA.

On April 27, 2020, Ashley and her weather team covered tornadoes in central and south Alabama non-stop. The coverage changed the lives of Alabamians and how they react to extreme weather. Her main aim is to educate the public on severe threats, and weather.

However, in July 2023, she took up a new role as the Public Information Officer for Auburn University’s Safety and Security Department.
