In 2002, Roker opted for gastric bypass surgery to shed excess weight, a decision he made after experiencing disappointment with numerous diet attempts. Just eight months post-surgery, the New York Daily News reported a significant 100-pound (45 kg) weight loss from his initial 320-pound (150 kg) frame. This transformative journey became the subject of Roker’s book, “Never Goin’ Back: Winning the Weight Loss Battle For Good,” published in 2013.
In 2005, he underwent a back surgery. Another knee replacement surgery followed in 2016. In October 2018, emergency carpal tunnel surgery was required. September 2019 saw him undergoing a hip replacement surgery.
In November 2020, he revealed his diagnosis of prostate cancer, which occurred in September 2020. Fortunately, he underwent a successful operation on November 9 and was recovering at home by November 17.
In November 2022, following a brief absence from the “Today” show, Roker disclosed his hospitalization for the treatment of blood clots in his lungs. His return to the show on January 6, 2023, brought to light additional health challenges, including internal bleeding that necessitated surgery, two bleeding ulcers, a colon resection surgery (removal of part or all of the colon), and gallbladder removal surgery. Roker expressed his gratitude to his wife and the medical professionals at NewYork-Presbyterian for saving his life during this trying time.
