Carlos Oher and Michael Oher’s Career
On March 6, 2015, Michael Oher signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. Despite facing challenges in his previous stint with the Tennessee Titans, Panthers GM Dave Gettleman declared Oher as the team’s starting left tackle for the upcoming season, expressing confidence in his abilities. Gettleman stated, “We did our homework on Michael, and we feel very strongly that he can be an answer for us. He’ll be inserted at left tackle, and we’ll go from there.” Oher, influenced by Cam Newton, had a standout season, delivering one of his best professional performances by safeguarding Newton’s blind side. He participated in 98.4% of the team’s snaps, allowed a career-low four sacks (tied for the eighth-fewest in the league), and incurred only three penalties for a total of 25 yards.
During that season, Oher played in his second Super Bowl, Super Bowl 50, as the starting left tackle, but the Panthers suffered a 24–10 defeat to the Denver Broncos.
On June 17, 2016, Oher secured a three-year contract extension with the Panthers valued at $21.6 million, including $9.5 million guaranteed. Unfortunately, his 2016 season was cut short when he was placed on injured reserve on November 25, 2016, due to a concussion, having participated in only three games. Subsequently, on July 20, 2017, the Panthers released Oher following a failed physical.
