He was cast as Kyle Anderson in the Last Man Standing tv show starring Tim Allen. His character was initially the boyfriend of the eldest daughter of Tim Allen’s character, but after Season 1 the producers aged the eldest daughter to play a more motherly role. Sanders’ character eventually became the boyfriend, and later husband, to the middle daughter.

He became interested in performing when he was nine years old and began taking training at the Flat Rock Playhouse, North Carolina’s state theater. At the age of 18, he graduated from the studio program. He appeared in over 16 productions while he was there, including A Christmas Carol, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Bye, Bye Birdie. He got his first operator when he was 12 years old, and at the age of 16, he did a series of TV commercials for General Mills in Georgia. In 2006, he made his cinematic debut in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, in which he played a minor role. The film was shot mostly in and around Charlotte, North Carolina.
He relocated to Los Angeles in January 2007. Within three months of arriving in Hollywood, he landed a role in a TV pilot, but the show was not picked up by the network. After a few months, he secured roles in the films Legally Blondes and Ghost Whisperer as Ned Banks. Tyler Patrick Jones had previously held the position. When the filmmakers decided to age Ned by a few years in order to explore more mature tales, he took up the part.
