Throughout his career, Bell has encountered and reported on various remarkable weather events. Some of his favorites include the first Storm of the Century, the March 1993 storm that paralyzed the western Carolinas and much of the East Coast; the Blizzard of ’96, which buried the Roanoke Valley under 29 inches of snow; and Hurricane Isabel, which inundated the Chesapeake Bay area in 2003.

Although he has a special fondness for snow and appreciated Washington’s record-setting snowfall in the winter of 2009-2010, Bell’s most unforgettable weather experience occurred during the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak while he was working for KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City. On that fateful day, central Oklahoma was ravaged by over 60 tornadoes, resulting in the tragic loss of 50 lives and causing $1.9 billion in damage. Bell and his colleagues at KOKH provided uninterrupted coverage of the storms for nearly nine hours. His dedication earned him the Governor’s Humanitarian Award for Outstanding Service, presented to him by Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating on June 23, 1999.
