Francis Chan Crazy Love
Francis and publisher David C Cook are the authors of the 2008 New York Times #1 book Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. Hawk Nelson’s album Crazy Love features a song with the same title that was inspired by the book, which also won the Retailers Choice Award for the best Christian Living book in 2009. The book Crazy Love explores the concept of the typical Christian’s love for God and how to transform that love into a “crazy, relentless, all-powerful love.”
Crazy Love has received generally favorable reviews, with Publishers Weekly giving it a high rating. Crazy Love is “a message that Christians sorely need to hear,” according to Challies.com. While the writing in the entire book is straightforward and understandable, Bookreporter.com noted that “his dynamic communication style does not fully translate to print,” but that overall the book was “certainly worth reading.”
Francis Chan Church
In 1994, Chan, his wife Lisa, and 30 other people started Cornerstone Community Church; within two months, there were 100 attendees. The congregation at the church kept growing, and by the year 2000, local officials had given their approval for a building addition that would have doubled the facility’s capacity and supported a 1,600-member congregation. In Ventura County, California, Cornerstone was one of the biggest churches as of January 2008.
Around the year 2008, Chan took a three-month leave from Cornerstone because he felt compelled to give more of himself to God. Chan contributed the majority of his book revenues, which amounted to around $2,000,000, to various charities and gave away roughly 50% of his income. He also refused to receive a salary from his church. All of it is donated to groups that help free sex slaves abroad. Furthermore, it was revealed in 2008 that Cornerstone will donate 55% of its earnings to philanthropic organizations.
With 100 students, Chan launched Eternity Bible College in 2004 as a ministry of Cornerstone Community Church. Eternity began offering a program in Ecuador in 2008. 47 graduates from the college were working in different regions of the world as of 2009. Chan informed his congregation that he was called to step down on Sunday, April 18, 2010. He claimed he felt called to San Francisco, California, in June 2011. He relocated to Northern California and established the “We Are Church” network of home churches. Chan joined the Abundant Life Christian Fellowship board of elders in September 2014; he left the congregation as an elder in August 2016. Up until 2020, he was a senior leader in the We Are Church network.
