Gary Delaney Career

Delaney previously worked as a photocopier repairman, a bank teller, and a garage custodian. He also appears in the horror-comedy film Trash House and writes for Birmingham-based FM radio station Kerrang! 105.2. A large portion of his work was allegedly plagiarized on the satirical website Sickipedia. When Delaney filed a complaint, the site removed the material and replaced it with a notice that said “joke removed due to a copyright complaint by Gary Delaney” and included a link to his website. Users on the site abused him and threatened him with death. His actions, however, prompted the website to begin attributing authorship to jokes appearing on its site.

Delaney supported Jerry Sadowitz on a UK tour in 2003, performing at Manchester University and the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London. Purist, his first Edinburgh Festival Fringe show, received mostly positive feedback, including four stars from the comedy website Chortle and The Independent newspaper. Delaney was the only comedian to have two of his jokes placed in the top ten of the third annual Dave Award for the Funniest Joke of the Fringe. Delaney toured Purist in 2013 after gaining popularity from appearances on Mock the Week and Dave’s One Night Stand.

Delaney appeared on Mock the Week in July 2012. Some Jersey residents were offended when he joked that the island’s residents were “trying to shake off their tax avoidance tag and return to their traditional reputation as Nazi sympathizers.” The BBC, on the other hand, stated that Mock the Week contains irreverent humor and that the comment was “clearly tongue-in-cheek. Delaney went on to appear in 18 episodes of the show. In May 2013, he described himself as a “right-wing libertarian” on the topical podcast No Pressure to be Funny.
