She started her career in 1983, with stops at Colorado Springs’ KRDO-TV and Santa Barbara’s KEYT-TV. In 1985, she began working as a reporter and weekend anchor for KTLA in Los Angeles. Fess Parker, an actor who lived in Santa Barbara and was a friend of the station’s news managing director at the time, recommended her to KTLA. Fernandez moved two years later to CBS-owned WBBM-TV in Chicago, and in 1989 to WCIX, CBS’s newly acquired station in Miami. She made headlines in Chicago in 1988 when she went boating with wanted drug dealer John Cappas and then accompanied him to his arrest by federal agents. In October, she landed her first national news job with CBS News. 1991, when she relocated to New York City and worked as a correspondent and backup anchor for the morning, evening, and weekend newscasts.  She later joined NBC, where she hosted Weekend Today and NBC Nightly News on Sunday, as well as filling in for Brian Williams on the Saturday edition and taking on various special reporting assignments in the United States and elsewhere.
