“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my father passed away very peacefully last night at the fantastic age of 86 years old,” Hope Willard tweeted on Saturday. “He kept moving, working, and making us happy until the very end. We loved him so very much! We will miss him forever.”

Fred Willard’s stage career began in the late 1950s when he moved to New York City. One of his earliest roles was in a production of Desperate Hours at a local YMCA, where he collaborated with Vic Grecco, his future comedy partner.

The duo, performing as “Willard & Grecco,” gained recognition in the Greenwich Village comedy scene, toured successfully, and appeared on prominent shows such as The Dean Martin Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and The Tonight Show. Despite being offered roles in Get Smart and The Carol Burnett Show, the opportunities fell through due to poor management, leading to the pair parting ways in 1968.

Willard made his film debut in the 1967 exploitation movie Teenage Mother. He later shared an anecdote about a screening where the audience booed his character for interrupting an attempted sexual assault scene.
