Jeff Gianola is a retired American television news anchor who made a name for himself during his long stint at KOIN 6, the CBS affiliate in Portland, Oregon. He wrapped up his broadcasting journey in October 2025, marking the end of an impressive thirty-six years on Portland television.
Gianola’s journey began in sunny San Diego, California, before he made his way to Portland’s KATU, the local ABC affiliate, in 1983. Prior to that, he was honing his skills as a general-assignment reporter at a television station in Santa Barbara. At KATU, he kicked off his career by taking on weather duties and later became a morning anchor. By 1985, he had climbed the ranks to evening anchor, teaming up with Julie Emry to co-host the evening newscasts throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s.
In August 1998, Gianola made the switch to CBS affiliate KOIN. The following year, in September 1999, he took on a new challenge by writing, producing, and starring in a lifestyle show called Quick Tips for Easy Living, which aired on Saturday afternoons before it was canceled in October 1999. His longtime news partner at KOIN was Anne State, who stayed with the station until April 2015, when she decided to step away from broadcasting to care for her parents. Alongside his anchoring duties, Gianola also produced the 1996 documentary No Perfect Answers: The Life and Architecture of Pietro Belluschi.
Gianola’s talents extended to film as well; he played a television news reporter in William Friedkin’s 2003 movie The Hunted, where you can spot his name on an advertisement on the side of a train in several scenes. He also made a cameo in the 1999 film Birddog, directed by Kelley Baker.
Fast forward to May 2020, when Gianola stepped in to anchor the CBS Weekend News on May 16–17, during a time when CBS’s New York City broadcast center was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This led affiliate stations to bring in substitute anchors from their own studios. In July 2025, Gianola announced his plans to retire in October 2025, bringing to a close a remarkable and impactful broadcasting career.
