Before joining The Washington Post and MSNBC, Capehart worked as a researcher for NBC’s The Today Show. He was on the editorial board of the New York Daily News from 1993 until 2000. At the time of his hire, Capehart was the newspaper’s youngest editorial board member. In 2000, he left the Daily News to work for Bloomberg News. Capehart counseled and authored speeches for Michael Bloomberg during his 2001 mayoral campaign in New York. In 2002, he returned to the New York Daily News as deputy editor of the editorial page, a position he held until 2004. In December 2004, Capehart joined Hill & Knowlton as a Senior Vice President and Senior Counselor of Public Affairs.

Capehart joined the editorial board of The Washington Post in 2007 as a journalist. He continues to work in that role and participates as an analyst to MSNBC. He also produces the Cape Up podcast, where he speaks with lawmakers about race, religion, age, gender, and cultural identity.
