Joy began singing at a Christian church she was attending in Arizona. She also grew up listening to folk music from Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley. This made her develop a passion for music at a very young age. Joy led worship and praise songs at her church for a while before releasing her first debut EP called Cathedrals in 2015. Joy decided against pursuing her career in music full-time after her college graduation by moving to East Nashville, Tennessee.

Her first deal was with Prescription Songs where they helped her produce and release her first EP. In 2016., Joy dropped her solo album titled Carry Me under the Well Records Label in April the same year. In 2019, she released a 2019 single called Sundays which was based according to her struggles and stories. The music video is also based on her sexuality as a Queer woman in the LGBTQ community.

In 2020, she released her second studio album titled Defense of My Happiness Vol 1. The album was recognized by billboards as a stunning emotional collection.
