Maria Owings Shriver is an American journalist, author, and advocate. A member of the prominent Shriver and Kennedy families, she is also the founder of the nonprofit organization The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement.

Shriver served as First Lady of California during her marriage to actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, from whom she filed for divorce in 2011. The divorce was finalized in 2021.

Shriver began her journalism career at CBS station KYW-TV before moving to CBS Morning News as an anchor. In 1986, she joined NBC News, where she anchored the weekend editions of Today and NBC Nightly News and worked as a correspondent for *Dateline NBC*. Known for her political coverage and in-depth reporting, she paused her journalism career in 2004 to focus on her duties as First Lady of California but returned to NBC in 2013 as a special anchor. Over her career, Shriver has earned numerous accolades, including a Peabody Award in 1998 and an Emmy Award for co-anchoring NBC’s coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics.
