Mark Esper is an American former 27th United States secretary of defense well known as a former U.S. Army officer and defense contractor lobbyist. Before becoming the United States secretary of defense, in 2017 to 2019 he worked as the 23rd United States Secretary of the Army.

Esper studied at Laurel Highlands High School where he graduated in 1982. He then attended the United States Military Academy and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1986. He also earned his master’s degree in public administration from the John F.
