Sonia Syngal is a prominent American business executive who took the helm as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Gap Inc., one of the biggest specialty apparel retailers in the U.S. She stepped into the CEO role in March 2020 but decided to resign from both her position and Gap Inc.’s board of directors on July 11, 2022.
Before her time at Gap Inc., Syngal amassed a wealth of experience at several Fortune 500 companies. She dedicated around a decade to Sun Microsystems, where she held various leadership roles that focused on manufacturing operations, logistics, and supply chain management. Additionally, she spent six years at Ford Motor Company, diving into product design, quality, and manufacturing engineering.
Syngal joined Gap Inc. in 2004 and climbed the ranks through several senior leadership roles. She served as managing director of Gap Inc.’s European operations, senior vice president for the International and International Outlet divisions, and executive vice president of global supply chain and product operations. In that last role, she was instrumental in enhancing the company’s global supply chain and refining its product-to-market strategy across all its brands.
From 2016 to 2020, Syngal was at the forefront as president and CEO of Old Navy, Gap Inc.’s largest brand. Under her leadership, Old Navy saw its annual sales soar from about $7 billion to $8 billion, expanded its North American retail presence to over 1,200 stores, and made significant strides in e-commerce and omnichannel capabilities.
When she became CEO of Gap Inc. in March 2020, she oversaw a diverse portfolio that included Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta. She managed operations across various markets and channels, leading a workforce of more than 100,000 employees. At the time, she stood out as one of the few women and women of color in the CEO role among Fortune 500 companies.
