His first two years in New York City were filled with a variety of small roles in everything from theater to television to commercials. By 1967, Kiser’s work had garnered significant acclaim, including an Obie Award and a Theater World Award for Fortune and Men’s Eyes. Kiser became a life member of The Actors Studio after appearing on several soap operas, including The Secret Storm and The Doctors. He appeared in the short-lived sitcoms The Roller Girls and Sugar Time! in 1978.

He played comedian Vic Hitler in the television drama Hill Street Blues (“Vic the Narcoleptic Comic”). He appeared on the syndicated sketch comedy show Off the Wall and was a member of Carol Burnett’s Carol & Company, which aired in 1990. He appeared on Walker, Texas Ranger, The Golden Girls, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (as H. G. Wells), and Will & Grace in the 1990s. By April 2016, several YouTube videos featuring “The Bernie Dance” had accumulated over 17 million views.
