Jim began his professional career as a freelance reporter back from 1970 to 1975. He was also a radio presenter and reporter in Vietnam and Cambodia. Jim even wrote various articles for the Far Eastern Economic Review. He went on to join NBC News in Saigon covering the various wars and violence in both Vietnam and Cambodia.
Towards the end of 1975, Jim covered the last phase of the Columnist takeover in Vietnam with the help of cameraman Neil Davis. His incredible work in Vietnam in 1975 for NBC News Earned Laurie a George Foster Peabody Award from the University of Georgia.
Laurie then covered various reports for ABC News from 1978 until his official departure from the station in 1999. In 1980, ABC launched its first documentary series titled This Shattered Land back. Jim worked for ABC and established the first American television network bureau in China by the end of 1985. Later, he reported from Beijing during the Tiananmen Square student protests. This was followed by the subsequent crackdown from May to June 1989.
