Wagner began her career as the Center for American Progress’ cultural correspondent. She was the editor-in-chief of The Fader magazine, from 2003 to 2007. She was also the executive director of the Not On Our Watch project, an advocacy organization dedicated to the prevention of mass atrocities and human rights violations. Wagner later became the White House correspondent for Politics Daily, an AOL News political news magazine. She appeared on MSNBC as an analyst on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.
She started hosting Now with Alex Wagner on weekdays on November 14, 2011. MSNBC president Phil Griffin announced the series’ cancellation on July 30, 2015, as part of an effort to shift the network’s daytime programming to more breaking news reposting and less political commentary and opinion. Wagner announced his departure from MSNBC to join The Atlantic as a senior editor on April 26, 2016. Wagner her major duty would be to moderate AtlanticLIVE events and assist with the development of video and TV projects with The Atlantic studios in addition to writing for The Atlantic.
Wagner went on to replace Vinita Nair on CBS This Morning Saturday. She remains a correspondent for CBS News. In 2020, Wagner went on to launch a podcast with Crooked Media and Cadence 13 that addressed the COVID -19 Pandemic. Wagner announced in June that she would host a show that would take over Maddow’s 9 p.m. slots on Tuesdays through Fridays.
