April graduated from Morgan State University with a B.S. in broadcast journalism and an honorary doctorate in 2017. Claflin University bestowed an honorary doctorate on her. April started her career as a jazz disc jockey after earning her B.S. She was a radio reporter for North Carolina A&T University and the news director for WXYV-FM in Baltimore, Maryland. She joined the White House press corps in January 1997, working for American Urban Radio Networks. As of 2020, April had covered four presidential administrations as a White House correspondent. She is a member of the National Press Club and has served on the board of directors of the White House Correspondents’ Association. She is a member of the National Press Club and has served on the board of the White House Correspondent’s Association, one of only three African Americans to be on the board.
As a White House correspondent, April has discussed the president’s remarks with the administration’s press secretaries, particularly Sean Spicer, as well as the president himself.
