Bernice King Alpha Kappa Alpha

Bernice belongs to the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. The first historically African American intercollegiate sorority is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (A). A group of sixteen students, led by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle, founded the sorority on January 15, 1908, at the historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C. Due to the dearth of chances for minorities and women in the early 20th century, joining a sorority helped African-American women break down barriers in fields where they had little influence or authority. The organization Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on January 29, 1913.

At the Georgia Retardation Center and Georgia Baptist Hospital, Bernice worked as a student chaplain. She served as a city attorney’s office intern. At Ebenezer Baptist Church, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. preached for the first time on March 27, 1988. You’ve Got To Rise Above The Crowd was the topic of the sermon. She was described as having a similar style to her father’s by Andrew Young, who was present for the sermon.
