Weir began his career in 1991 at KAAL in Austin, Minnesota, as a general assignment reporter and weekend sportscaster. [1] He went on to host the WGN Morning News on WGN in Chicago from 1995 to 1998, after which he became the sports anchor at WLUK in Green Bay, Wisconsin. From 1998 until 2002, Weir worked as a sports anchor at KABC-TV in Los Angeles, where he anchored the popular weekly Monday Night Live show that aired following Monday Night Football. He conceived, scripted, and hosted three television pilots for the USA and FX Networks between 2002 and 2004. Weir joined ABC Events in 2004 and covered breaking news and global trends on Good Morning America, including the economic rise of China and India.
He went to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, as well as Afghanistan in 2010[3] and oversaw the network’s coverage of Iraq, Where Things Stand, during the peak of the American troop surge. Weir has been a part of three Space Shuttle launches and landings, was the first American to broadcast live from Tibet and kicked off the 2007 Earth Day special with an unprecedented underwater live report from the Great Barrier Reef. Weir was selected anchor of the short-lived ABC News magazine “iCaught” in June 2007. He produced special hours for ABC as a writer and host on topics ranging from religion to brain research to the rise and fall of General Motors. He was designated co-anchor with Terry Moran in July 2010.
Weir’s final story for Nightline aired on ABC on Friday, October 11, 2013, and was on the popular photography blog Humans of New York. Weir remarked in an interview with site creator Brandon Stanton, “I’m a critical, jaded journalist… The tiny moments of human connection are what get to me the most. I remember seeing a legless youngster being passed between his father and mother in India. It was simple, yet it had an impact on me. I’ve been particularly sensitive to shows of parental affection since having a child of my own.” On October 12, 2013, CNN announced that Bill would be joining the network as a host and Chief Innovation Correspondent. CNN began transmitting in 2015.
