Mr. Chapek was hired by H. J. Heinz Company in the brand management department. He also worked for J. Walter Thompson, which is now Wunderman Thompson, at the same time. In 1993, he joined The Walt Disney Company. He began his Disney career as the unit president of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, a division of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. He worked in the unit when he first joined the company in 1993. Chapek served as unit president until 2006, when he was promoted to Disney’s global president of home video, a position he held until November 2009. For the next two years, Chapek was the president of distribution at Walt Disney Studios. He was named President of Disney Consumer Products. He then rose to the position of Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts on 23rd February 2015.
He succeeded Thomas O. Staggs, who had been named COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Disney the previous month. In March 2018, Chapek’s unit, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, was merged with the Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media segment and renamed Walt Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products as part of the company’s strategic reorganization. Chapek, as chairman of the former, was named chairman of this new segment. Chapek remained in his position until February 2020, when he was named as the successor to Robert Allen Iger, also known as Bob Iger, the sixth and former CEO of Disney, who stepped down. On February 20, 2020, the announcement was made.
