Sonenclar performed the Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse song “Feeling Good” during his 2012 audition for The X Factor USA’s second season (famously covered by Nina Simone among others). All four judges gave Sonenclar standing ovations, and she moved on to the next round. L.A. Reid said, “You may be 13, but your soul is old!” and Simon Cowell gave her “4,833 yeses.” She passed the first day of the X Factor “bootcamp” after her successful initial audition, where she performed “Pumped Up Kicks” with Beatrice Miller. She was one of the roughly sixty contestants who were asked to continue out of the 120 who auditioned at bootcamp that day.

She was selected as one of the six “teens” category contestants to perform at the “judges’ houses” stage of the competition after boot camp. For the mentor of the “teens” category, Britney Spears, and Spears’ special guest judge, will.i.am, she gave a performance of the song “Brokenhearted.” She received positive feedback from both Spears and will.i.am, who praised her performance and called her “possessed.” After performing “Good Feeling” in the Top 16 round and “It Will Rain” in the Top 13 round, Sonenclar continued on in the competition.

Sonenclar was revealed to have received the second-most votes in the competition when she made it to the Top 12 round and sang “My Heart Will Go On.” Tate Stevens received the most votes overall, and Sonenclar received the second-most votes again when she made it to the Top 10 round.
