He was also the founder and president of In Touch Ministries which is known for broadcasting sermons through national television. Charles even served as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1984 to 1986.

Charles launched a half-hour religious television program called The Chapel Hour after joining the Staff of First Baptist Church of Atlanta. He then established In Touch Ministries in 1977 with a mission to lead people worldwide into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. In 1978, In Touch was able to televise its sermons through The Christian Broadcasting Network.
