In 1993, he made his acting debut as the lead in Destiny Ridge. Smith appeared in 29 episodes of Stargate: Atlantis as the recurring character major Evan Lorne. He also played Major Lorne in two episodes of Stargate SG-1, “Enemy Mine” in season 7 and “The Road Not Taken” in season 10. In 1999, he caught the attention of Brian De Palma and was cast in the science fiction adventure Mission to Mars (2000). In addition to Supernatural, Smallville, Sanctuary, Tru Calling, Battlestar Galactica, Outer Limits, Human Target, and The Twilight Zone, the actor has appeared in a number of television shows. On Syfy’s Eureka, he appeared as Deputy Andy. Smith co-stars with Felicia Day in Syfy’s Eureka, which premiered in 2012. He also had a starring role in the SyFy movie Metal Shifters in 2010. In addition to acting, he also narrated the Canadian-made documentaries Combat school and Jetstream.
