Maya Wiley ( born Maya D. Wiley) is a civil rights activist, lawyer, and educator from the United States. She served as chair of the Civilian Complaint Review Board and as counsel to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Wiley was appointed as the legal counsel for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. She was the chair of the Civilian Complaint Review Board from 2016 to 2017. (CCRB). She worked as a legal expert for MSNBC from August 2018 to January 2021.

Wiley worked for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York’s Civil Division. She worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Open Society Institute before being designated counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014. Wiley was de Blasio’s lawyer for two and a half years, during which time she became known for coining the term “agents of the city” to conceal de Blasio’s interactions with lobbyists. She also founded and directed the Center for Social Inclusion, a national policy strategy organization committed to the abolition of institutional racism.
Wiley was a candidate for NAACP president in 2013, but Cornell William Brooks was elected instead. Wiley has given talks at The New School and featured as a political and legal commentator on MSNBC. Wiley announced her candidacy for mayor of New York City in the 2021 election in October 2020. She had received around $720,000 from contributors as of mid-January 2021, spent about $404,000 on her campaign, and had about $316,000 left.
