Nick Schifrin is an American award-winning journalist currently working as the foreign affairs and defense correspondent for PBS NewsHour, based in Washington, D.C. Before joining PBS NewsHour, he worked as the Middle East correspondent for Al Jazeera America. He is also a Council on Foreign Relations term member and an Overseas Press Club Foundation board member.

Schifrin was born in New York City in 1984 and grew up in Chicago. He attended Columbia University in New York, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern and Asian languages and cultures. After college, he worked as a producer for ABC News in New York and Washington, D.C.

In 2008, Schifrin joined Al Jazeera English in Washington, D.C., as a correspondent, where he covered national security and foreign policy. He reported on the Arab Spring uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, as well as the Syrian civil war.

In 2012, Schifrin moved to Nairobi, Kenya, to cover East Africa for Al Jazeera English. He reported on the conflict in South Sudan, the terrorist attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Schifrin joined PBS NewsHour in 2017 as a foreign affairs correspondent. He has reported on the North Korean nuclear crisis, the war in Syria, and the rise of far-right populism in Europe. He has also interviewed world leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Schifrin has received several awards for his reporting, including a Peabody Award for his coverage of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and an Overseas Press Club Award for his reporting on the Syrian refugee crisis.
