His father was a salesman who moved to Los Angeles in 1950 after serving in the Canadian army during World War II. Listening to the radio was his escape when he was 12 years old. He was a big fan of Top 40 D.J. “Emperor” Bob Hudson and once rode his bike to Pasadena radio station KRLA to meet him. Hendrie’s parents divorced when he was 13 years old. His father relocated to Europe and married a woman with four children. Hendrie’s family’s home was repossessed, forcing them to relocate to a small rented apartment where he spent his high school years sleeping on the couch.

At the age of 19, he made a demo tape and got his first DJ job at WBJW in Winter Park, a city just outside Orlando. In 1978, he left WBJW to work evenings at WNOE-FM in New Orleans’ French Quarter. From there, he went on to spin records in Miami, San Diego, Los Angeles, Utica, and Fresno until 1988. The radio personality returned to Los Angeles in 1989 to make her debut as a weekend talk show host on KFI, a news/talk station. After his show on KFI was canceled, KVEN in Ventura, California, hired him in August 1990. On his radio talk show in late September 1990, he debuted his first fictional on-air character, Iraqi Raj Fahneen. As a radio satirist whose show is driven by a cast of fictional characters, all of whom he created and plays on air, he sets up a topic and discusses it with one of his characters. In October 1996 he went back to KFI to host The Phil Hendrie Show daily. Hendrie’s popularity resulted in the radio show going national in 1999 via Premiere Radio Networks, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications.

Hendrie’s flagship station, KFI, moved him to sister station KLAC in February 2005 in an effort to help turn the all-sports talk radio station into a ratings winner with entertainment programming. Until 2006, the show was nationally syndicated on 100 radio stations. On April 27, 2006, he announced that he would be leaving radio to pursue his acting career full-time. Hendrie was playing cynical history teacher Dick Green on NBC’s Teachers at the time. His final day on the air was June 23, 2006.
