Reid began her journalism career in 1997, when she relocated from New York and her job at a business consulting firm to South Florida to work for WSVN Channel 7’s morning show. In 2003, she left journalism to work for the anti-war organization America Coming Together, which was fighting President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. She later worked on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 before returning to broadcasting as a talk radio host. From 2006 to 2007, Reid co-hosted Wake Up South Florida, a morning radio talk show broadcast from Radio One’s then-Miami affiliate WTPS. She worked as The Grio’s managing editor, a political columnist for the Miami Herald, and the editor of the political magazine The Reid Report. Reid hosted her own MSNBC afternoon cable news program, The Reid Report, from February 2014 to February 2015. Reid was moved to a new job as an MSNBC national correspondent after the show was canceled on February 19, 2015.

Why Was Joy Reid’s Show Canceled?
MSNBC canceled The ReidOut in February 2025 as part of a broad primetime restructuring under the leadership of new network president Rebecca Kutler. The move was largely attributed to declining viewership ratings and a desire to refresh the network’s 7 p.m. lineup.
In place of Reid’s show, MSNBC launched a panel-style program co-hosted by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez—a shift aimed at bringing more varied perspectives and revitalizing the network’s appeal during the critical early evening hour.
The cancellation occurred amid wider corporate changes, including MSNBC’s separation from parent company Comcast, which prompted a rethinking of strategy and programming across the board.
