Since joining the 60 Minutes team in 1996, Liz Hayes has been traveling the globe, reporting for the show and sharing stories of people from all walks of life. Her coverage has included the 2010 flood crisis in Pakistan, the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and the most recent US presidential election. Despite often encountering difficult circumstances, Liz is constantly humbled by the individuals who allow her to tell their stories. She finds inspiration in the human experience, which motivates her work.
Liz began her career in journalism as a writer for New Idea and TV Week in Sydney. However, after just a few weeks, she transitioned to television reporting. For two years, she worked as an on-the-road reporter for Channel Ten’s Eyewitness News in Sydney. In 1981, she was recruited to National Nine News as a reporter and later became the presenter of the 11.30 Morning News. In 1986, Liz produced and presented a well-known documentary called ‘The Great Gift’, which focused on heart transplant patients and the exceptional work of heart surgeon Dr. Victor Chang. This documentary earned her a Logie award, as well as the role of co-host of the national breakfast program Today. For 10 years, Liz hosted this challenging program, waking up early every day to deliver two hours of live television, covering a range of topics including sports, politics, showbiz, and economics. She became known for her interviewing skills, conducting four to five interviews per day on a variety of subjects.
