Tazi’s modeling career began when she was asked to participate in a Forever 21 campaign. She rose to fame after modeling for Sephora and Refinery29, amassing a 200,000-strong Instagram following for her distinct focus on body positivity. She went on to use her modeling jobs to fund a music career, finding a manager and starting to produce music through her web connections. She had always planned to go into music after finishing her modeling career. Tazi’s debut commercial song, “East Coast Hiding,” was released independently in January 2017, followed by “Shyne,” which was released in March via an exclusive story on The Fader. Intro To, her debut eight-track EP, was released on October 20, 2017 in collaboration with Empire Distribution. Tazi’s “dreamy brand of rap-singing over vibey, rolling beats, it’s a confident alt R&B sound that examines the hardships of overcoming the grind through its honest, Queens-inflected poetry,” according to Time upon the EP’s release. The EP debuted in the iTunes R&B Chart’s top ten. Dounia opened for Christine and the Queens, a French band, on many of their North American tour dates. Tazi performed alongside electro-pop group SHAED at Billboard’s “Industry Nights” talent showcase. In anticipation of the release, a music video for the EP’s third song, “Rich Girl Mood,” directed by Tired Studio Production and featuring Kehlani, was released on November 28. Tazi released two singles in March 2019, “ROYAL” and “LOWKEY GRL,” and her third EP, NOT GOOD FOR THE EGO, was released in May.
