Kirk Franklin & The Family

Franklin established “The Family,” a 17-voice choir composed of neighbors and friends, in 1992. Vicki Mack-Lataillade, a co-founder of the budding GospoCentric Records label, first heard one of Kirk & The Family’s demo tapes in 1992 and was so taken by them that she quickly signed them to a recording contract.

The group, now referred to as The Family, issued its debut album in 1993 under the name The Family. The song reached platinum sales status after spending nearly two years on the gospel music charts and R&B charts. For 42 weeks, it held the top spot on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. It followed Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace and BeBe & CeCe Winans’ Addictive Love as the only other gospel albums to sell over a million copies. Kirk Franklin & the Family Christmas, a 1995 holiday album, was followed by Whatcha Lookin’ 4 in 1996, two years later.

Family members sued Franklin and GospoCentric Records for millions of dollars in royalties for their contributions to The Nu Nation Project in 2000. The Family albums came to an end at this point as Franklin moved on to form the One Nation Crew and released Kirk Franklin Presents 1NC. The album was created before the legal dispute. At the 25th Annual Stellar Awards show taping in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 16, 2010, The Family briefly reunited on stage to play songs that they had made popular in the 1990s.
