Carr spent a year playing the piano for Andrae Crouch’s music ministry. Later, in 1986, Carr was appointed musical director and pianist for Rev. James Cleveland’s ministry. He worked there for seven years, up to Cleveland’s passing. Carr eventually rose to the position of director of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ Choir, where he had the chance to collaborate with both gospel and pop musicians, including Kirk Franklin, Gladys Knight, Yolanda Adams, and Stevie Wonder.
The Kurt Singers is a gospel vocal group that Carr also founded. In 1988, they published their debut EP, I’m Glad, on an independent label. Kurt and the singers’ first major label album, Together, was released in 1991 on Light Records. Changes inside the label gave rise to Vicki Mack Lataillade’s GospoCentric Records.
