Why did Lisa Goodwin Allen become a chef? She got her start in the food industry by working at the Holbeck Ghyll restaurant in Windermere, Cumbria. While finishing a three-year National Vocational Qualification in catering, she worked there part-time. When she finished her college course, she was offered a full-time position at Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

She decided to leave the restaurant after a year because she missed her family in the north of England, and in 2001, when she was 20 years old, she started working as a demi chef de partie under Nigel Haworth at Northcote. She later revealed that when she initially joined, her plan was to stay for one to two years before leaving.

She received a chef de partie promotion after a year. She was promoted to junior sous chef in 2003 and then, after a year, back to sous chef. At the age of 23, she was appointed the restaurant’s head chef and given overall control of the kitchen.

In 2018, she was able to keep the Michelin star at Northcote that had been held by Haworth since 1996, even though he had moved on to become the restaurant’s chef ambassador. In 2006, she was a semifinalist for the Roux Scholarship, which went to Pravin Sharma. The Northern Hospitality Awards honored her with the title of Chef of the Year in 2008.

In 2010, she participated in the northwest competition on the fifth season of the BBC cooking competition show Great British Menu. The only other chef competing in the competition was Allen. She competed against fellow neighborhood chefs Aiden Byrne and Johnnie Mountain. She won the round and advanced to the final thanks to the group’s mentor, Marcus Wareing.

With her winning dish, she was chosen as one of four chefs to prepare food for a banquet held at Prince Charles’ invitation. A rabbit and leek turnover with piccalilli was her winning recipe. The Craft Guild of Chefs honored her with the title of Restaurant Chef of the Year in 2011. As a chef mentor for the semi-finalists, she appeared in MasterChef: The Professionals, series 8, episode 18.
