Rachael helped oversee the ABC’s Gippsland bureau in Sale, eastern Victoria, after learning the ropes during her cadetship. It was here that the girl from Essendon learned how to dig for stories, met colorful characters who would become lifelong friends, and learned the region’s important lessons: milk price hikes are a good thing, and you can’t get beers at the Lakes Entrance (sand) Bar, as her mentor noted on her farewell card.

She received numerous legal reporting awards for her work, including the Walkley Award for Best Radio Current Affairs Report in 2008 for a breaking story about the incompetence of the Victorian Medical Practitioners Board. She’d discovered that the Board had accused a Victorian dermatologist of rape. She gained the trust of the women who were later molested, and she kept the story a secret for a year to protect their case. Rachael has been in London since 2008, when she began working on the flagship national Radio Current Affairs programs AM, PM, and The World Today. she’s worked for Insiders and, most recently, The 7:30 Report. In 2009, Rachael’s most difficult assignment was covering Victoria’s Black Saturday Bushfires and its devastation.
