Rebecca’s college years in Tarkio, Missouri exposed her to the seasonal wonders of spring tornadoes and winter blizzards. Each season left an indelible impression on her senses, as she marveled at the distinct smells, vibrant colors, and varying temperatures. The transformation of trees throughout the year served as a dramatic departure from the warm and humid climate of the South.
Upon relocating to Seattle, Rebecca found herself working temporarily on the 27th floor of the old Seafirst building, where she experienced the Inauguration Day Windstorm of 1993. The powerful winds tested the structural integrity of the building, causing it to sway back and forth, altering the panoramic view from east to west through the tall windows.
In February 2001, just as Rebecca was concluding a weather report on Northwest Cable News, the ground beneath her began to shake as the Nisqually earthquake rattled the region. She has also witnessed and reported on the three record-breaking all-time high temperatures recorded at Sea-Tac airport. The first milestone was reached in 1994, with temperatures soaring to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, followed by 103 degrees in 2009. Most recently, in 2021, the mercury hit an all-time high of 108 degrees. Over the years, Rebecca has gained valuable experience navigating numerous snowstorms, windstorms, and river flooding events, honing her skills in providing essential weather forecasts that not only help residents of Western Washington plan their day but also prepare them for impending weather conditions.
