Braxton began her career in 1990 as a founding member of the R&B singing group The Braxtons, which she formed with her sisters. The Braxtons formed as a trio in 1996 and released their debut album, So Many Ways, shortly thereafter. DreamWorks Records released her debut self-titled album in 2000.
