The American lawyer from Southfield has worked on a number of high-profile or contentious cases. He defended Jack Kevorkian in the first of several doctor-assisted suicide trials in 1994. Kevorkian was acquitted in that trial, as well as in all subsequent ones in which Fieger represented him. (Kevorkian was convicted in his last assisted suicide trial in 1999, when he represented himself.) These events were adapted into a film, You Don’t Know Jack, which aired on HBO and starred actor Danny Huston as Fieger. In 1997, he gave $4 million to the Detroit College of Law, now the Michigan State University College of Law, to establish the Geoffrey Fieger Trial Practice Institute, the nation’s first trial practice institute for law students. She was one of the attorneys on the reality show Power of Attorney, and she was opposing counsel in an episode of NBC’s The Law Firm. Fieger was indicted on federal campaign finance charges in August 2007; the US government claimed that Fieger illegally funneled $127,000 to John Edwards’ 2004 presidential campaign. Gerry Spence, a well-known defense attorney, announced that this would be his final case. Fieger was acquitted of all ten charges by a jury, and Fieger’s co-defendant was also acquitted. and law partner Ven Johnson on five charges, on June 2, 2008.
