In 1982, at the age of 25, Jakes assumed the role of pastor at Greater Emanuel Temple of Faith, a small storefront church in Smithers, West Virginia, which had just ten members. By 1988, he had affiliated with the Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies, a denomination established by Bishop Sherman Watkins. In 1990, Jakes relocated to South Charleston, West Virginia, where his congregation expanded to 300 members. He subsequently moved to Cross Lanes, West Virginia in 1993.
In 1995, Jakes founded “TDJ Enterprises,” a company responsible for publishing his books and producing his films. During 1995-1996, he hosted “Get Ready,” a weekly radio and television show with nationwide syndication. In 1996, he established The Potter’s House, a non-denominational church located in Dallas, Texas, boasting a 5,000-seat auditorium and offices for staff on its sprawling 34-acre hilltop campus.
In 2005, Jakes joined President George W. Bush on a visit to areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina. On January 20, 2009, he led the early morning prayer service for President Barack Obama at St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C.
In 2009, Jakes collaborated with Phil McGraw, Jay McGraw, and CBS Television Distribution to launch a syndicated, secular talk show. Unfortunately, due to economic challenges in the syndicated television market, the program never made it to the air. RELATED: David Hefner
Fast forward to July 2015, when Tegna, Inc. and Debmar-Mercury revealed plans for a new secular talk show hosted by Jakes, called T. D. Jakes. This show underwent a test run on Tegna stations in Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, and Minneapolis from August 17 to September 11, 2015. On May 10, 2016, Tegna announced that the show would begin airing on September 12 in over 50 markets across the country. Regrettably, on March 15, 2017, the talk show was canceled due to poor ratings and low clearances.
