In the American crime comedy-drama television series Good Girls, she played Ruby Hill, Beth’s best friend and a waitress who is struggling to pay for her daughter Sara’s kidney disease and medical treatments. Three suburban Michigan mothers, two of whom are sisters, are struggling to make ends meet in the show. They’re tired of having everything taken away from them, so they plan an unlikely heist by robbing a supermarket, only to discover that they’ve gotten themselves into more trouble than they bargained for. The store manager notices their successful robbery after recognizing one of the women, but for a reason other than money.
Retta worked as a chemist after graduating. In her spare time, she performed stand-up comedy at Raleigh’s Charlie Goodnights Comedy Club. She eventually relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a comedy career.  Retta stated on Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! that when she first began performing stand-up comedy, she chose the name Retta rather than explaining her name. She began performing standup in 1996, but she did not begin “earning money” until 1998, when she began touring on the college circuit. Retta admitted that she used to feel “really nauseated” before a performance, but that the sensation faded with time. Retta has stated that her stand-up material is made up of slightly embellished stories from her everyday life, family, and friends.
Retta has opened for comedians including Shirley Hemphill and Bobby Collins. She has appeared on Bravo’s Welcome to the Parker, E! Entertainment Television’s The Soup, Freddie, Moesha, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Jenny Jones Show’s “Comedy Divas Showcase,” and Retta has appeared on Premium Blend, a Comedy Central show that features upcoming comedians. Retta began appearing as Donna Meagle, an employee in the Parks Department of the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana, on the NBC comedy series Parks and Recreation in 2009. s was promoted to a full-time regular cast member in the third season after a stand-up performance at the University of Illinois at Springfield.
In 2013, Retta hosted the third Critics’ Choice Television Awards. She appeared as a contestant on Hollywood Game Night in 2014, alongside Paget Brewster, Michael Chiklis, Mario Lopez, Thomas Lennon, and Alyssa Milano. Retta was one of the audiobook narrators for Welcome to Night Vale, a novel based on the eponymous podcast series in which she voices Old Woman Josie, in 2015.
